Crocodile

Square belly scales, each with a small sensor pit. The dots are the quickest proof of real crocodile.

Scale: Even, squared rows
Look for: One dot per scale
Finish: Glazed or nubuck

Alligator

Longer rectangular scales with no sensor pits, and a web pattern near the belly's centre. Takes the deepest burnish.

Scale: Long rectangles
Look for: No dots, central web
Finish: High-gloss patina

Ostrich

Raised quill follicles scattered across the hide. Soft, supple and quick to break in.

Texture: Raised quill bumps
Feel: Soft, flexible
Finish: Matte or burnished

Measure your foot

Stand on paper, heel against a wall, and mark the tip of your longest toe. Measure in the evening, when feet are largest.

Foot length

CrocodileA firm hide that gives little. Between sizes, take the larger.
AlligatorSoftens slightly at the flex point. Take your usual size.
LoafersSnug at first, easing with wear. Take your usual size.
Wide feetChoose Wide or Extra wide when you order. Width is set before the pair is cut.
