Crocodile or Alligator? Choosing Your Skin
Two hides that look alike and wear differently. Here is how to choose.
Crocodile and alligator are often confused, and both make an exceptional shoe. The difference is in the pattern, the finish and how the leather behaves on the foot.
Crocodile
Even, squared scales with a small dot on each. The hide is firm and gives little, so if you are between sizes we suggest the larger one. It suits a glazed, high-shine finish.
Alligator
Longer, rectangular scales with no dots and a web pattern near the centre of the belly. It softens slightly at the flex point and takes the deepest burnish, which is why it is our first choice for patina colours.
Which one?
For a formal black or glazed oxford, crocodile. For a rich burgundy, violet or patina finish, alligator. Not sure? Ask us and we will help you choose.
